Slam in the XP disk, restart, press any key to kick start it, then go through the menu's to create and modify, and format partitions.

I think the poster is referring to resizing in order to install vista. I had to do it, but luckily I had a copy of Partition Magic that I had never used and it went perfect. I don't know of any freeware programs off the top of my head, but the XP install disk is a good bet as long as he has one. If your OS came preloaded, you sometimes don't get the disk.

I tried partition logic, and it trashed my xp partition. The xp setup disk works great, but you need to back up and reinstall windows xp. After that, windows vista installation was quick and painless. No problems at all. It didn't preload the drivers for my phone modem and sound card, but windows update handled that very quickly and easily. I am very inpressed with what I got! -- Robert Firth

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bootit NG by Terabyte Unlimited. Much cheaper than Partition Magic and it can do disc imaging which Partition Magic can't.
Brian Bernard

Yes, I use their products and they are great. I especially use IFD (Image for DOS) to save images to a partition. It also saves them USB, CDs or DVDs.

Hi,
BootIT NG from terabyteunlimited.com
Download it, run the program to create the bootable floppy. Boot the system with said disk and cancel setup to enter maintenance mode. From there you can resize, slide, and create/destroy partitions. You need not register or install it for this type of work. The author makes this functionality available intentionally in hopes that you will like it enough to purchase the registration (which for me has been well worth the price).
